Texas vehicle inspection FAQ

State Car & Truck Inspection & Emissions Testing

With routine automobile inspections and periodic emissions checks, drivers can be made aware of any issues with their vehicles. In case your vehicle didn’t clear the inspection or the vehicle-emissions test, you will definitely know it requires some immediate attention and potentially some repair work. Vehicle owners must schedule the repair work ASAP because it may jeopardize the reliability of the vehicle and even lead to substantial penalties or even a disqualified registration. For that reason, it is always recommended to have your vehicle examined by a competent service technician at least every 6 months to avoid all these hassles. Some frequently asked inquiries on vehicle inspection are outlined below.

What is On-Board Diagnostics?

The OBD or On-Board Diagnostics, or OBD II is a standard computer system carried out in all cars constructed in and after 1996. Basically, all the cars made in 1996 and after will have an OBD system in them, which offers data records on self-diagnosis of the car usually utilized by automotive professionals prior to performing any vehicle repair services.

Common Causes of a Failed Emissions Test

An emissions test can fail for many reasons as a result of malfunctioning vehicle elements such as an injector, oxygen sensor, ignition system and even an EVAP system. The most common cause is defective injectors. Either the injectors or a malfunctioning oxygen sensing unit can set off a “rich air-fuel blend” resulting in a poor emissions test result.

If your automobile has damaged spark plugs, there is a greater chance that it might be the root cause of a boost in exhaust emissions. This, subsequently, can lead to a failed vehicle-emissions test.

Any kind of problem or deficiencies in the EVAP system or evaporative emission control system can trigger an issue in the handling of the gas vapor discharged from the automobile causing atmospheric pollution.

If your car hasn’t gone through routine maintenance and the “check engine” light is brightened on the control panel, your automobile might fail the vehicle-emissions test.

What Do They Check for in a Vehicle Inspection?

An authorized assessor performs a car evaluation at state-approved assessment stations only. This is what they will check for:

  • Headlights: headlamps evaluation to ensure correct operation, no cracked lenses or lamps, lights are the right color, are the same, and turn signals are operable.
  • Tail lights: Turn signals, marker lights, hazard lights, license plate lights, brake lights, reverse lights are operable, and no damaged taillights
  • Wheels and Tires: to inspect tire conditions for any type of indications of damage and if there is a need for replacement
  • Mirrors: Check to make sure no mirrors are cracked, broken or missing
  • Seat belts: to evaluate safety belt condition and ensure they are securely working or require replacing
  • Brakes: a thorough brake assessment to ensure proper brake action and if there are any type of brake fluid leaks
  • Horn: make sure the horn is operative
  • Examination of suspension and shock absorbers

How Long Does A Safety Inspection Take?

Depending upon the state, city, and area where the vehicle tests are conducted, the car safety inspection period may differ. Nonetheless, for most cars, this process typically takes an hour to 90 minutes.
